Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land App Reviews

Solid but not without some key flaws

Only through a handful of missions but so far having a blast. Overall a great game, with lots of options for character development and a compelling storyline. That being said, there are a two key issues that are holding me back from a higher rating. 1) touch controls can be jumpy sometimes. A long press to select an attack will sometimes register as a short press and youll end up selecting the character instead. Also, some errant screen shifts will cause you to move a character when you dont want to. That can be a real pain when youre in the middle of combat and you waste precious action points on a needless move. Id also like to see some more attention put into moving around the app, there are just too many finger swipes to get around. Perhaps a pinch to zoom function or something of that sort. 2) app will not rotate. This doesnt impact gameplay, but in my opinion is a huge oversight. The app will only run in the orientation such that the volume controls are on the top of the screen, which is the direct opposite orientation for users with a smart cover ( like myself). If I want to place the iPad on a desk or table to play, I have to disconnect the smart cover and use it as a stand, after rotating the iPad 180 degrees. Again, nothing that impacts gameplay. But it is an annoyance nonetheless. These shortcomings are minor, and if you can get past them youre looking at a solid game. If both of these issues are addressed with updates Ill gladly revise to 4 or 5 stars.

Impressive!

Very short, but very fun! I would pay good money to see more games like this!

Best RPG!

This is one of the best RPGs Ive ever played on iPhone so far. Hell, its on my all-time-top 5 favorite list. Like other reviews say the control is little flimsy and some levels are hard(for me, level 10 was harder than level 11), but overall it is very good game. A suggestion I would make is, more explanation about skills! I had hard time figuring out which ones to invest my exp. With that said, since this is a very splendid work of implanting Cthulhu mythos into an iPhone game, Im giving you 5 stars!

Cthulhu Ftagn!

Really nice turn based game. Controls are a bit challenging but I found them reasonably intuitive. Nice touches like world war I backdrop, interesting weapons, items and armor and character development options. Also liked the sanity points concept and using psychoanalysis to restore them. The lovecraftian world was well captured. There are eerie sounds as you battle increasingly weird horrors. The dialogue and mission intros make reference back to the Cthulhu mythos. Fog of war could have been a nice addition, to add that "whats behind the door" surprise factor. I picked up a FF tactics game for the iPad a while back looking for a nice turn based experience - I think that game cost about 15 bucks - and I can tell you that this game was much better than that. Nice value for the price as well. Itd be nice to see an addon or sequel that includes otherworldly landscapes with non Euclidean architecture but that will have to wait.

This is excellent!

Other than the control scheme, which takes some getting use to, its fabulous!

Good game

I just played the tutorial. Good graphics.

Wonderful Turn Based Strategy game!!!

I am a long time turn-based-strategy gamer, and most titles fall way short and there are not a ton of them around. This game did the genre justice, solid Lovecraftian story, Character development & types, as well as game dynamics. These games are NOT intended to be a world of warcraft pace, it is slow and deliberate strategy so haters get a clue as to the game type. In reading the bad reviews, yes the controls could handle a few tweaks but its not that hard and if that prevented game play from being possible then u clearly didnt play X-com back in the day. This was a top notch game for the companies first go, great story, good challenge and lots of fun! More please!!!

Not good

Bad controls, bad graphics, bad mechanics. Another % "to hit" based game. Let me save you time and unless you enjoy reading "Missed...Missed...Missed...Critical Hit!...Miss" Im a fan of the mythos universe but cant stand the game enough to even give the story a chance. Im guessing its also bad. If you want a strategy game that is turn based; Ravenmark, Outwitters, Hero Academy, Uniwar, are all better choices. This game is a lucky dice roll simulator.

Great Game Indeed!!!

Good for those who already played X-COM Style turn-base strategy game which was released in 1990s..

Scratches that TBS itch

One of the best squad level turn based strategies Ive seen on iOS. The levels are scripted, limiting replay-ability, but there is a wide variety of ways to develop your characters. All with a nice Cthulhu paintjob.

Great game for strategy fans

Passed several metro rides with this game. Great fun for strategy fans. Light Roh elements and a fun Lovecraft them made this game a total blast!

Excellent turn based Lovecraft rpg

This is a very exciting game, doing exactly what I wanted: a complex true to Lovecraft rpg!! I would say this is only a taste of what I want out of a game like this. I want way more, like a final fantasy level of complexity- more levels, characters, weapons, time to level up, equipment etc, but great start! Hoping for major camera improvements- a lot of times it was hard to get the right view, a building would block it. Also hard to get buttons to do what I wanted on iPhone- trying to rotate camera button instead brought up character movement. I accidentally moved the characters by mistake due to the touch controls. Small refinements. Great game over all hope its just the tip of the iceberg!

Fun but mostly unplayable

Its a pretty game with great graphics and an interesting storyline but you are so crazy underpowered for the enemies you face that you just basically die until you get bored and uninstall. They have a normal and a hard mode, I guess they should add a "rediculously simple" mode.

Frustrating

This is essentially a turn based combat game set in World War I. I have several criticisms: 1. Too complex. Select this item over here, then double tap that, then hold that thing down... I just want to play, not master the complex controls. 2. Awkward controls. Even if you master them, it often is difficult to hit the right movement point. Simply adding an undo feature would help a great deal. 3. Slow gameplay. I played this for about 3 hours now and havent seen anything remotely Lovecraftian. Im still plodding through trench warfare with pistols. Booo! 4. Unclear objectives. I was told I had to take the eastern trench to capture the communications system. But there is no objective highlighted on the map and there is no compass. On the plus side, the graphics are quite nice. If you like turn based minifig war games you might enjoy this but if you are an H. P. Lovecraft fan, just move on.

Lovecraft theme, Xcom mechanics

A decent Mythos storyline built on top of X-Com UFO Defense mechanics with some CoC character stats. As long as you go through the tutorial to see how everything works, the mechanics are implemented ok (if you have fat fingers, wont want to play on the iPhone). Relatively short for $4.99, a little replay ability if interested in trying different combat strategies.

Love it

Just wish the adventure was longer.

Great turn-based strategy!

Im a big fan of this game. A fun turn-based strategy with Lovecrafts horror. The controls arent THAT hard to learn. For those wondering when the Lovecraft elements kick in, act 3 is when the supernatural events start.

Great strategy game!

Love the new game mode!!

Unique and Very well done!

Solid game with lots of stats to tweak, preparing your squad of World War 1 era, heros to face the unspeakable horrors behind and between the reality we inhabit. There are a few small things Id change to make it slicker and my current version seems to have some issues with the dialogues not lining up properly with the action in the game. These are relatively minor issues however. This is a VERY solid and enjoyable turn-based RPG set in Chaosiums wonderfully realized version of the Lovecraft Universe. It features great game models, with designs based on Chaosiums gaming miniatures. Take away the rough edges and this is easilly a 5 star effort!

Original game better than the new prequel

I really liked the initial game. The WWI setting, the turn-based design (although hexes are better than squares) and the ability to level up between missions was very attractive. I enjoyed it throughly. I cant say the same for the new prequel. Kauls Diary does not tell the purchaser that instead of playing the investigators, you will be playing evil Dr. Kaul. I did not like killing Tommys or Huns for that matter. I know some feel its edgy to play the evil side, but I only feel degraded. In addition you are unable to change weaponry or level up between episodes, although with the characters you are playing leveling up might consist of increasing the volume of your monsters slobbering. I rated the entire game as four stars, but Kauls diary only rates two.
